Rick Reiter

Tax Attorney

Rick Reiter is an experienced tax litigation attorney with over 20 years of helping clients navigate and resolve complex IRS and state tax controversies.

Originally interested in international law and a State Department career, Rick discovered a passion for litigation in law school and built a career in courtroom advocacy. In 2009, he specialized in tax litigation, leading to his advanced taxation degree.

Born in Winter Park, Florida, Rick earned a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Alabama (1993) and an M.A. from the University of Wyoming (1998). He graduated with honors from George Washington University School of Law (J.D., 2001) and later completed an LL.M. in Taxation with distinction at Georgetown University Law Center (2011).

Rick excels in legal writing and is praised by clients for his calming voice and clear explanations of complex tax matters. He strongly values the collaborative environment at The Tax Defenders.

In his free time, Rick has taken some exotic trips, (including Zanzibar and G Bay) and aspires to visit every Four Seasons hotel worldwide. He’d pursue luxury retail buying if not in tax law, and lives by his mom’s advice: “If you want it done right, do it yourself.”

His background includes service in the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force Reserve (retired), and a clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He has represented taxpayers in more than 300 U.S. Tax Court cases, worked tax controversies for the IRS.

He also held roles at firms including CliftonLarsonAllen (leading their Tax Controversy practice), Tucker Griffin Barnes, and Skeen Law Office.

Today, Rick is proud to be at The Tax Defenders, drawn to its strong teamwork culture where leaders Joe and Kelly work alongside the team toward shared client success.

Rick is admitted to practice in Tennessee and previously held licenses in Colorado, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Alabama. He resides in Mount Juliet, Tennessee,
